Megan Chan's BOOK BLOG
For Students
You may know the feeling. You're staring at the cover of a book your teacher has given you, dismayed.
Oh, great. Another assigned book.
For many students, assigned reading falls on the scale of "Yay" to "This sucks" on "THIS IS SOMETHING I AM GOING TO AVOID FOR AS LONG AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE." Unfortunately, for many people school can eliminate any passion they have for reading, turning it into an activity that is associated with weekly quizzes, long tests, and even longer essays. School associates reading with the very opposite thing it could be: a hobby you can enjoy in your free time.

The reality is: you probably won't learn to love reading in a classroom. Schools often teach reading the same way they teach math: like it is as systematic and straightforward as adding 1+1. But unlike math, reading can be tailored to fit the individual. For some people, that can mean reading long novels, and for others it can mean reading short, lighthearted stories. It can mean nonfiction or fantasy. It can mean graphic novels or comics. But above all, it means finding something YOU will enjoy reading.
